How to Get to Anantnag
Anantnag is reached most easily via Srinagar International Airport (SXR) or by rail to Anantnag railway station (ANT) on the Jammu-Baramulla line. Road links along the Srinagar-Anantnag corridor are frequent; expect 1.5-2 hours from Srinagar by taxi or bus and much longer from Jammu by road.
Srinagar International Airport (SXR): Srinagar (SXR) is the closest major airport for Anantnag. From SXR you can take a prepaid airport taxi to Anantnag (approx. ₹1,000-2,500; about 1.5-2 hours by road depending on traffic), or catch a shared Sumo/jeep (local shared taxis) from outside the terminal (approx. ₹200-600; ~1.5-2 hours). There are also occasional state-run buses and private coaches between Srinagar and Anantnag; fares are typically much lower (see buses card).
Jammu Tawi (IXJ): Jammu Tawi is the larger southern gateway to the Kashmir Valley and is used when flying into Jammu. Road travel from Jammu to Anantnag is long (roughly 7-9 hours by road). Options from Jammu Tawi include long-distance buses or private taxi hires (private taxi fares can be ₹4,000-8,000 depending on vehicle and season) and occasional daytime trains on parts of the route; many travelers prefer to fly into Srinagar to keep travel time down.
Train: Anantnag has a railway station (Anantnag, station code ANT) on the Kashmir Valley rail link (Jammu-Baramulla line). Local passenger and shuttle services connect Anantnag with Srinagar/Baramulla and nearby towns; short-distance train journeys to/from Srinagar typically take around 40-60 minutes. Fares for local passenger trains are very low (often a few tens of rupees for unreserved travel); check Indian Railways for current schedules and availability.
Bus: State-run buses (J&K Road Transport Corporation and city/state services) and numerous private buses ply the Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund corridor. Road travel from Srinagar to Anantnag by bus or coach usually takes about 1.5-2 hours; typical bus fares are modest (around ₹40-₹200 depending on service). For longer-distance travel (Jammu-Anantnag) buses take 7-10 hours and prices vary by operator and comfort level.
How to Get Around Anantnag
Most visitors get around Anantnag by a mix of shared Sumos and private taxis for intercity travel, with local buses and autos for short hops; trains are useful for quick travel along the valley rail link. For getting around town, walking and autos are the most practical - use taxis when carrying luggage or traveling outside regular bus/train times.
- Train (₹10-₹150) - The Anantnag railway station (ANT) sits on the Kashmir Valley rail link and is useful for fast, inexpensive travel to Srinagar, Qazigund and Baramulla. Local passenger trains and shuttles are frequent on the valley section; travel times to Srinagar are typically under an hour. Book longer-distance services via Indian Railways and expect unreserved/second-class fares to be very low.
- Shared taxis / Sumo (₹100-₹600) - Shared Sumos and jeeps are the backbone of inter-town travel in the valley - you'll find them at terminals and outside the Srinagar airport. They're cheaper than private taxis and leave once full; expect faster door-to-door travel than buses on flexible schedules. Prices are moderate (short corridor trips are inexpensive) and are a good balance of cost and convenience, but they can be cramped with luggage.
- Private taxi (₹500-₹2,500) - Private taxis are widely available from Srinagar airport, railway stations and city stands and are the most convenient way to reach Anantnag with luggage or on tight schedules. They're pricier than shared options but offer direct service and flexibility - negotiate a fixed fare or use the prepaid counters at airports. During peak seasons fares rise and travel times depend heavily on highway conditions.
- Local bus / Coach (₹20-₹300) - J&K Road Transport Corporation and private operators run regular buses between Srinagar, Anantnag and surrounding towns. Buses are the cheapest way to travel the corridor and are reasonably frequent; coaches on longer routes (e.g., Jammu-Srinagar) are available but the journey is long. Buses are a good budget option but can be slower and less comfortable than taxis.
- Auto-rickshaw / Local taxi (₹20-₹200) - Auto-rickshaws and small local taxis handle short trips within Anantnag town and nearby markets. They're cheap for short hops and useful for getting around when foot access is limited, but negotiate or confirm the meter/price before starting. Expect fares to be modest, and availability can drop late at night.
- Walking - Anantnag's centre and markets are compact enough to explore on foot; walking is often the fastest way to navigate congested streets and bazaars. Wear sensible shoes for uneven pavement and allow extra time in busy market areas. Walking pairs well with short auto/taxi hops for outer neighborhoods.
