How to Get to Anantnag

Anantnag is reached most easily via Srinagar International Airport (SXR) or by rail to Anantnag railway station (ANT) on the Jammu-Baramulla line. Road links along the Srinagar-Anantnag corridor are frequent; expect 1.5-2 hours from Srinagar by taxi or bus and much longer from Jammu by road.

By Air

Srinagar International Airport (SXR): Srinagar (SXR) is the closest major airport for Anantnag. From SXR you can take a prepaid airport taxi to Anantnag (approx. ₹1,000-2,500; about 1.5-2 hours by road depending on traffic), or catch a shared Sumo/jeep (local shared taxis) from outside the terminal (approx. ₹200-600; ~1.5-2 hours). There are also occasional state-run buses and private coaches between Srinagar and Anantnag; fares are typically much lower (see buses card).

Jammu Tawi (IXJ): Jammu Tawi is the larger southern gateway to the Kashmir Valley and is used when flying into Jammu. Road travel from Jammu to Anantnag is long (roughly 7-9 hours by road). Options from Jammu Tawi include long-distance buses or private taxi hires (private taxi fares can be ₹4,000-8,000 depending on vehicle and season) and occasional daytime trains on parts of the route; many travelers prefer to fly into Srinagar to keep travel time down.

By Train & Bus

Train: Anantnag has a railway station (Anantnag, station code ANT) on the Kashmir Valley rail link (Jammu-Baramulla line). Local passenger and shuttle services connect Anantnag with Srinagar/Baramulla and nearby towns; short-distance train journeys to/from Srinagar typically take around 40-60 minutes. Fares for local passenger trains are very low (often a few tens of rupees for unreserved travel); check Indian Railways for current schedules and availability.

Bus: State-run buses (J&K Road Transport Corporation and city/state services) and numerous private buses ply the Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund corridor. Road travel from Srinagar to Anantnag by bus or coach usually takes about 1.5-2 hours; typical bus fares are modest (around ₹40-₹200 depending on service). For longer-distance travel (Jammu-Anantnag) buses take 7-10 hours and prices vary by operator and comfort level.

Most visitors get around Anantnag by a mix of shared Sumos and private taxis for intercity travel, with local buses and autos for short hops; trains are useful for quick travel along the valley rail link.
