Ananda Temple
Religious Site Significant Bagan Buddhist temple with gilded spire
Ananda Temple in Bagan, built in the 12th century, attracts visitors for its vaulted brick-and-stucco architecture, indoor Buddha images and sunsets over the temple plain.
Ananda Temple is a Buddhist temple in the Bagan archaeological zone of central Myanmar, traditionally dated to about 1105 and attributed to King Kyanzittha of the Pagan dynasty. It is one of the best-preserved monuments in the Bagan plain.
The temple is noted for its cruciform plan and enclosed galleries that surround a central shrine; the interior houses four large standing Buddha images that face the four cardinal directions. Upper terraces and galleries provide panoramas across the Bagan plain, which contains over 2,000 surviving monuments.
Built as a major monastery and pilgrimage temple in the early 12th century, it has remained an active religious site and has undergone multiple restorations following earthquake damage over the centuries. Conservation work has aimed to retain the original layout and key sculptural elements.
