Anacapa Island
Islands Small Channel Island with seabird colonies and lighthouse
Part of Channel Islands National Park off Santa Barbara, Anacapa Island attracts boat trips for seabird colonies, a historic lighthouse, sea caves, snorkeling and short coastal hikes across volcanic islets.
Anacapa Island is a small group of three islets off the Southern California coast that form part of Channel Islands National Park and the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. The islets are known for steep sea cliffs, seabird rookeries and a historic light station on the eastern islet.
The island’s main attractions are the Anacapa Island Light and the small visitor facilities at Landing Cove, cliff-top trails and extensive intertidal and nearshore marine life for snorkeling and wildlife viewing. Day trips are operated by concession boats from the mainland; landings are generally day-use only and shore access is concentrated at the eastern landing.
The islands have long associations with the local Chumash people and were later used for navigation and lighthouse operations. Over the 20th century they became protected as part of the national park and marine sanctuary system and are managed for recreation and habitat conservation.
Anacapa lies off the Ventura/Oxnard coast of Southern California within the Channel Islands archipelago. The islets are remote and visited almost exclusively by boat; approach and landing conditions depend on sea state and weather.
- Landing conditions: Landing approaches can be rough - the narrow Landing Cove often requires small-boat transfers from park concession boats and can be closed in high seas.
- Best time to visit: Spring and early summer are best for seabird colonies and wildflowers, while water activities such as snorkeling are most popular in warmer months.
What to See #
- East Anacapa (Landing Cove and Lighthouse): Contains the historic light station and the small visitor facilities at the landing cove, with interpretive signage and the main access point for day visitors. The cove provides a stair landing from boats and the brief trails on the islet lead up to the lighthouse and viewpoints.
- Middle and West Anacapa (sea cliffs and tidepools): Comprised of the middle and west islets, these areas feature steep sea cliffs, seabird colonies and rocky intertidal zones with tidepools; trails loop along cliff edges and lead to natural viewpoints. Access to these islets is by short crossings from the east islet landing area and they have no developed facilities.
How to Get to Anacapa Island #
Anacapa Island is part of Channel Islands National Park and is reached only by boat. Regular passenger ferries and day-trip services operated by Island Packers depart from Ventura Harbor and occasionally from Oxnard; the crossing is roughly about an hour depending on sea conditions. Private boats may land at designated docks (East Anacapa) but require permits from Channel Islands National Park-check park and ferry operator schedules in advance.
Tips for Visiting Anacapa Island #
- Take the earliest public boat from the mainland to Anacapa - mornings tend to have calmer seas and fewer day-trip crowds before winds pick up.
- Check the National Park Service page before travel for seasonal seabird‑nesting closures and trail restrictions (certain cliffs and paths are closed in spring/early summer).
- Walk beyond the landing area to the viewpoints and the natural arch; many visitors disembark and stay near the dock, but the short upland trails offer the island's best panoramas and wildlife viewing.
Best Time to Visit Anacapa Island #
For Anacapa Island, aim for spring for wildlife or early autumn for calmer seas and fewer crowds; boat access and weather influence visits year-round.
