Amorium
Archaeological Site Byzantine-era ruined city and strategic Anatolian site
Amorium in Afyonkarahisar Province is a Byzantine-era archaeological site with city ruins and fortifications; scholars and visitors interested in Byzantine history examine its remains.
Amorium is the ruined site of an important Phrygian and Byzantine city in Afyonkarahisar Province, Turkey, notable as a major inland urban centre in central Anatolia. It was a key administrative and military centre during the Byzantine period.
Surviving remains include long stretches of ruined defensive walls, an identifiable acropolis, and broad archaeological mounds that mark the footprint of the ancient city. The layout reflects continuous occupation from classical antiquity into the medieval era.
The city played a prominent role in Byzantine history and was captured by the Abbasid forces in 838 AD during a major campaign against the eastern Roman Empire. After the medieval period the site declined and was partially abandoned; later medieval and Ottoman activity reused some remains.
Amorium is located inland in western central Anatolia within Afyonkarahisar Province, near modern villages in the Emirdağ/Çay region, set on a rolling plateau of central Anatolia.
