Remains at the site include archaeological foundations, tombs, and surface finds that illustrate Bronze Age occupation and port-related activity. Pottery sherds and funerary remains recovered here help document trade and ritual practices tied to the north coast of Crete.
Occupied during the Bronze Age, Amnisos functioned as a coastal port settlement connected to larger Minoan centers on Crete. Archaeological investigations over the 19th and 20th centuries have documented funerary complexes and domestic and ritual architecture.
The site lies on Crete’s north shore, approximately 6 km east of the center of Heraklion, close to the modern coastal village that shares the ancient name.
