Archaeological and historic evidence show occupation in antiquity and use as an early medieval fortress and settlement; the site later played roles in regional medieval history. Over time the settlement declined and survives today as an archaeological and scenic ruin.
The site occupies a raised position above the surrounding landscape in northern Spain, within the administrative region of Castile and León and the province of Burgos.
