Amarnath Temple
Religious Site Hindu cave shrine in Kashmir and major pilgrimage site
The Amarnath cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir sits high in the Himalayas and contains a seasonal ice stalagmite revered as a Shiva lingam. Pilgrims undertake the annual Amarnath Yatra, a strenuous summer trek over mountain passes.
Amarnath Temple is a Hindu cave shrine in the Kashmir region that is sacred to followers of Shiva; the site is centred on a naturally forming ice stalagmite inside a Himalayan cave.
Pilgrims reach the cave by one of two main trekking routes and gather at the ice formation, which is regarded as a Shiva linga. The seasonal pilgrimage draws tens of thousands of devotees during the summer yatra period when access is possible and organised by government and religious authorities.
The cave and its pilgrimage tradition are of ancient origin with long-standing religious significance; the Amarnath Yatra has been recorded in historical sources and has continued as a major annual pilgrimage in the modern era. Management and access arrangements have evolved over time to accommodate large numbers of pilgrims.
The shrine is located high in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalaya in the Jammu and Kashmir region and is reached by trekking routes from Pahalgam and Baltal; the cave sits at high altitude within mountainous terrain.
- Seasonal access: The cave shrine sits at high altitude and is typically visited during the summer months; weather and snow make it inaccessible in winter.
- Ice linga: The shrine contains a naturally formed ice stalagmite that is venerated as a Shiva linga and is the central focus of the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage.
What to See #
- Pahalgam route: The Pahalgam route follows a longer mountain trek through the Lidder Valley and is one of the traditional pilgrim approaches to the cave shrine.
- Baltal route: The Baltal route is a shorter, steeper approach used as a faster access option for the summer pilgrimage season, often supporting pony and porter services.
How to Get to Amarnath Temple #
The Amarnath Cave shrine is approached via two established pilgrimage routes. The traditional Pahalgam (Chandanwari) route is the longer mountain trek (roughly 40-50 km on foot from the Pahalgam/Chandanwari start), while the Baltal route is much shorter on foot (around 14 km from Baltal). Both Pahalgam and Baltal are reached by road from Srinagar - pilgrims normally travel by vehicle to the chosen base (special pilgrimage buses and vehicle convoys operate during the yatra season); from the base camps the shrine is reached on foot, by pony or by arranged porters/pack animals according to local arrangements.
Tips for Visiting Amarnath Temple #
- Plan the Amarnath Yatra during the official season (typically July-August) and register through the government or recognized tour operators well in advance; permits and medical clearance are mandatory for most pilgrims.
- Choose your route deliberately: the Baltal route is much shorter but steeper and more crowded, while the Pahalgam route is longer and generally less steep-select based on fitness and altitude experience.
- Allow time to acclimatize at lower elevations before attempting the high-altitude cave shrine and book government transport, accommodation and porter/palanquin services ahead of time to avoid last‑minute shortages.
Best Time to Visit Amarnath Temple #
The only practical time to visit Amarnath Temple is during the official summer pilgrimage window (typically July-August) when routes are open.
