Amalfi Cathedral
Church Seaside cathedral with Arab-Norman and Byzantine influences
Medieval cathedral opening onto Amalfi’s main square, combining Arab-Norman and Romanesque features with a decorated façade and cloister; tourists visit for its chapels and the Amalfi Coast setting.
Amalfi Cathedral (Duomo di Amalfi) is the principal cathedral in the town of Amalfi, Campania, dedicated to Saint Andrew and with medieval origins. Its visible fabric reflects a mix of Romanesque, Byzantine and later styles accumulated over centuries.
The façade and broad stairway leading from the piazza are primary attractions, along with the cloister and the cathedral’s interior chapels. Visitors commonly note the bell tower and the crypt, which contains relics associated with the cathedral’s patron saint.
Construction and renovation phases span the medieval period into later centuries, with major additions and decorative programs carried out between the 11th and 13th centuries and subsequent restorations. The building served as the town’s main ecclesiastical centre and as a repository for civic and religious treasures.
Located in the coastal town of Amalfi on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, the cathedral stands at the upper end of the main square and is immediately accessible from the town’s harbor and pedestrian routes; nearby cities include Salerno and Salerno is the nearest larger transport hub along the coast.
- Patron saint: The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Andrew and combines Romanesque and Byzantine elements visible in its façade and interior decorations.
- Main viewing point: The cathedral sits above a broad staircase from the main square, which is a common viewpoint for photographs of the façade and steps.

- Cloister of Paradise: A medieval cloister built in the 13th century that surrounds a small garden and is noted for its arcaded walkways and decorative capitals.
- Crypt of Saint Andrew: Houses a crypt that preserves relics associated with the cathedral's patron saint and is a focus for religious veneration.
- Bell tower: A multi-stage bell tower dating to the medieval period that is visible from the Piazza del Duomo and contributes to the cathedral's skyline.
How to Get to Amalfi Cathedral #
Amalfi Cathedral (Duomo di Amalfi) is in the centre of Amalfi town, immediately off the main square (Piazza Duomo). By road the town is reached on the coastal Strada Statale 163 “Amalfitana” (SS163); Amalfi is about 30 km along the SS163 from Salerno (allow around 1 hour by car depending on traffic). Regular SITA buses run the Amalfi Coast route (Salerno-Amalfi-Positano); ferries also connect Salerno and Positano with Amalfi in high season. From Amalfi’s harbor the cathedral is a short uphill walk of roughly 200-300 metres from the port/central bus stop.
Tips for Visiting Amalfi Cathedral #
- Arrive at opening time (early morning) to see the façade and enter before cruise-ship and day‑trip crowds swell the Piazza Duomo.
- Buy the combined ticket that includes the Cathedral, the Cloister of Paradise (Chiostro del Paradiso) and the Museum so you don't miss the cloister and crypt, which are quieter and historically rich.
- Plan visits outside the peak summer months when possible-late spring or early autumn offers better light for photos and fewer crowds on the cathedral steps.
