Amaknak Island
Island Island hosting Dutch Harbor and Unalaska port facilities
Part of Unalaska, Amaknak Island contains Dutch Harbor-the North Pacific’s major fishing port-where visitors see commercial seafood operations, WWII sites and rugged Aleutian landscapes.
Amaknak Island is a small island in the Fox Islands group of the eastern Aleutian chain in Alaska, notable for hosting the port facilities known as Dutch Harbor. It is part of the city of Unalaska and functions as a major base for regional fishing operations.
The built-up harbour area and industrial quays dominate the island; maritime and seafood-processing infrastructure are the primary reasons people visit or transit the island. The island also has sites and memorials relating to the 1942 air raid on Dutch Harbor during World War II.
Amaknak sits adjacent to much larger Unalaska Island, separated by a narrow channel, and is part of the Fox Islands subgroup of the Aleutians off the southwestern coast of Alaska. The island’s harbour provides one of the main sheltered anchorages in the eastern Aleutians.
- Economic role: The island is the site of the commercial port of Dutch Harbor and forms part of the city of Unalaska, with substantial seafood-processing and shipping infrastructure.
- World War II history: Dutch Harbor was attacked by Japanese aircraft in June 1942 during World War II, an event that is part of the island's modern history.
What to See #
- Dutch Harbor: The deep-water port and fishing facilities at Dutch Harbor form the island's principal built area and are the main logistics hub for regional seafood fleets.
