Amager is an island immediately southeast of central Copenhagen in the Capital Region of Denmark that forms part of the city’s urban and recreational fringe. It combines residential districts, modern development, parkland and transport infrastructure.
Notable features include Amager Strandpark, a popular urban beach and park, and Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup) on the island’s southeastern shore. The island also includes the Ørestad development area with tram and metro links into central Copenhagen.
Historically parts of Amager were reclaimed and urbanised during the 20th century to accommodate growth around Copenhagen; today it functions as both a transport hub and a recreational zone with beaches, cycle routes and waterfront promenades.
Amager sits directly adjacent to central Copenhagen across bridges and road links and is integrated into the capital’s public-transport network.

How to Get to Amager #
Amager is the island immediately southeast of central Copenhagen and includes Copenhagen Airport. From Copenhagen Central Station you can reach Amager by taking the Metro M1 or M2 (M2 goes directly to Lufthavnen/Copenhagen Airport), with stations such as Amagerbro and Christianshavn on the island; many parts of Amager are a short walk (5-20 minutes) from a metro stop.
By car it is only a few kilometres from central Copenhagen across the bridges; the island is served by local roads and the Øresund/Amager road connections, and driving from downtown typically takes 5-15 minutes depending on destination and traffic.
Tips for Visiting Amager #
- Use the Copenhagen Metro (M2) to Amager Strand station to reach Amager Strandpark quickly and avoid finding parking; weekdays and early mornings are noticeably quieter than summer weekend afternoons.
- Head southeast along the island to Kalvebod Fælled and the protected wetlands-these areas are less visited than the main beach and are excellent for birdwatching at dawn and dusk.
- Explore by bike using Copenhagen's extensive cycle lanes and the island's bridges; cycling lets you cover more of Amager's mix of beaches, parks and neighbourhood cafés without joining beach crowds.
