Ama Dablam
Mountain Iconic Himalayan peak in Nepal, technical climbing route
A sharply profiled Himalayan peak in eastern Nepal renowned among climbers and trekkers. Ama Dablam appears on approaches to Everest region routes; visitors photograph it from valley trails or attempt technical ascents with experienced teams.
Ama Dablam is a steep, pyramidal mountain in eastern Nepal’s Khumbu region, noted for its striking alpine profile and a hanging glacier on its southwest ridge known as the ‘dablam’. It reaches 6,812 metres in elevation and is a familiar landmark for trekkers and climbers approaching Everest country.
The peak is prized by mountaineers for technical routes on mixed ice and rock and is commonly attempted in the spring and autumn climbing seasons. Base camp for climbing approaches sits in the Khumbu Valley and expeditions typically follow established alpine lines on the mountain’s faces.
A modern Himalayan climbing objective, Ama Dablam was first successfully ascended in 1961 by a mountaineering expedition and has since become a technical classic in the Nepalese Himalaya. Sherpa climbers and local lodge operators in the Khumbu have long used the surrounding valleys for settlement and trekking support.
It lies in Solukhumbu District in Koshi Province, in the Khumbu subregion south of the main ridge of the Himalaya; it is visible from trekking routes between Lukla, Namche Bazaar and Tengboche.
- Height: Rises to an elevation of 6,812 metres, making it one of the more prominent peaks in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal.
- Climbing note: First climbed in 1961; the mountain is a popular but technical objective for experienced alpine climbers and requires technical ice and rock climbing skills.
