Altyn-Tagh
Mountains Remote mountain range along northern Tibetan Plateau
The Altyn-Tagh (Altun Mountains) runs along the northern edge of the Tibetan Plateau in western China; its high, arid peaks and passes attract mountaineers, geologists and remote-route travellers.
Altyn-Tagh is a major mountain range on the northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau in northwestern China. It forms a significant topographic barrier separating the high plateau to the south from the arid basins to the north.
The range stretches for several hundred kilometres and consists of high, rugged ridges and internal basins; it is an important watershed and climatic divide in the region. The mountains are largely remote and sparsely populated, with limited infrastructure.
Historically the range has acted as a natural frontier between lowland basins and the Tibetan Plateau and has influenced regional trade and travel routes across central Asia. Geological processes and uplift associated with the India-Asia collision have shaped the range.
Geographically the Altyn-Tagh lies along the boundary between Xinjiang and Qinghai provinces, forming part of the northern edge of the Tibetan Plateau and overlooking the Tarim Basin to the northwest and Qaidam Basin to the northeast.
