Altai Tavan Bogd National Park
National Park Mongolian national park containing Tavan Bogd massif, glaciers
Home to the Tavan Bogd massif on Mongolia’s western border, Altai Tavan Bogd National Park offers glacier‑topped peaks, multi‑day treks, Kazakh nomad culture and horseback travel opportunities.
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park is a protected area in Bayan-Ölgii Province in far-west Mongolia, designated in 1996 to conserve the Tavan Bogd mountains and surrounding alpine landscapes. It contains Mongolia’s highest point and extensive glacial terrain.
The park’s highlights include the Tavan Bogd massif with the Khuiten Peak (4,374 m), large glacial lakes such as Khoton and Khurgan, and valley glaciers that produce visible icefields and moraines. Trekkers follow multi-day routes that cross glacial valleys and alpine passes; mountain climbing routes reach snow and ice above 4,000 meters.
The area was traditionally used by Kazakh nomadic herders and is still seasonally occupied for summer grazing and eagle-hunting traditions. The park was created to protect both its natural features and the cultural landscape; infrastructure for tourism is basic and oriented toward guided trekking and mountaineering.
Geographically it sits in the Mongolian Altai range in Bayan-Ölgii Province in the extreme west of Mongolia, adjacent to the borders with Russia and China. The park occupies high, rugged terrain of peaks, glaciers and lakes rather than lowland plains or forests.
- Altitude and access: The park covers a large high-altitude area in far-west Mongolia and contains peaks above 4,000 meters, so acclimatization and basic alpine experience are important for visitors.
- Border restrictions: Parts of the massif sit at or near the international tripoint with Russia and China, and some border-adjacent areas have restricted access requiring permits.
