Alpstein
Mountains Swiss sub-range with dramatic limestone peaks like Säntis
Alpstein’s limestone ridges around Säntis draw hikers for marked trails, cable cars, alpine huts and panoramic views. Visit for day hikes, via ferrata routes, mountain dairies and classic Swiss pasture landscapes in Canton St. Gallen.
The Alpstein is a compact mountain massif in the Appenzell Alps of northeastern Switzerland, centred on the prominent summit of Säntis at 2,502 metres. The range is noted for its steep limestone ridges, alpine lakes and accessible summits.
Hikers and day-trippers use cableways and well-marked trails to reach high viewpoints and mountain huts; the Säntis summit can be reached by cable car from Schwägalp and offers panoramic views across the Swiss Plateau. Popular shorter outings include visits to Seealpsee and the escarpment at Ebenalp, where the cliff-side Aescher guesthouse is a frequently photographed stopping point.
The Alpstein landscape has been shaped by alpine grazing and small-scale mountain agriculture for centuries; mountain huts and trails developed in the 19th and 20th centuries to support tourism and mountaineering. The area has long been used for seasonal pasture and for local trade between valley communities.
The massif lies mainly within the cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell in northeastern Switzerland, rising directly above valley towns such as Appenzell and the Schwägalp pass. The Alpstein is approximately 25 km southeast of the city of St. Gallen.

- Karst ridges and trails: Karst limestone landscape with steep ridges, alpine meadows and a dense marked hiking network ranging from short lake walks to multi-day ridge traverses.
