Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument

Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument preserves a series of outcrops and quarry pits in the northern Texas Panhandle where high-quality flint was quarried by Native Americans for thousands of years. The monument protects exposed flint-bearing layers and associated archaeological evidence of prehistoric quarrying.

Visitors follow ranger-led hikes to view quarry pits, flint nodules and interpretive exhibits that explain prehistoric quarrying techniques and regional trade in stone tools. Access is managed to protect the fragile archaeological resources, and unaccompanied entry into quarry areas is generally not permitted.

The site documents a long history of use by indigenous peoples who extracted and traded the distinctive flint. Archaeological investigations show the material was a valued raw material for stone tools across the region.

Geographically the monument lies in the northern Texas Panhandle near the Canadian River and the Lake Meredith area, north of Amarillo, and is administered by the U.S. National Park Service.
