The Alhóndiga de Granaditas is a large stone former granary in the historic centre of Guanajuato, Mexico, notable as a focal point of the 1810 events of the Mexican War of Independence. It is now a public cultural site housing museum displays.
The building’s massive stone exterior and fortified appearance are distinctive; inside visitors encounter a central courtyard and exhibition rooms that form the Regional Museum of Guanajuato. The structure’s solidity and interior ramp and stair features are among the architectural highlights.
Constructed in the late 18th century as a municipal grain storehouse, the building became a key site in September 1810 when insurgent forces attacked during the early stages of the independence uprising. Over the 19th and 20th centuries it changed uses and was conserved and converted to museum and cultural functions.
The Alhóndiga stands in the historic core of Guanajuato city, adjacent to central plazas and close to the hillside of Cerro de la Bufa, within the state of Guanajuato.
