Alexandria Troas
Archaeological Site Ruined Hellenistic and Roman city near Aegean coast
Alexandria Troas in Çanakkale Province preserves Hellenistic and Roman urban remains on the Aegean coast; archaeologists and history-minded visitors inspect walls, theatre and harbor structures.
Alexandria Troas is an extensive Hellenistic and Roman city ruin on the Aegean coast in Çanakkale Province, Turkey, founded in the Hellenistic period around the early 3rd century BC. It became an important regional port and urban centre in antiquity.
The site features a large Roman-period theatre, long stretches of city walls and a visible street grid with building foundations across a broad archaeological plain. The harbour area and associated waterfront remains lie to the west of the main mound and illustrate the city’s coastal role.
Founded in the Hellenistic era and significantly developed under Roman rule, the city functioned as a regional capital and port. Over time it declined and its ruins were later reused as building material; systematic excavations began in the 20th century and continue intermittently.
Sited on the Aegean shoreline of the ancient Troad, the ruins are close to the modern village of Dalyan in Çanakkale Province, on relatively flat coastal terrain with low surrounding hills.
- Top highlights: Excavations exposed extensive Roman-period architecture; the theatre and defensive walls are the most easily seen features on site.
- Access note: Visits require walking across uneven terrain and archaeological mounds; there are no large visitor facilities on site.
