Alexandra Land
Island Remote Arctic island within Franz Josef Land archipelago
Western island of Franz Josef Land, Alexandra Land features glaciers, polar tundra and seasonal research and military activity. Expedition cruises and scientific teams approach its coastline to study Arctic wildlife and sea ice; access is tightly regulated.
Alexandra Land is a high-Arctic island in the Franz Josef Land archipelago, administered from Arkhangelskaya oblast in Russia. It hosts Russian polar and military infrastructure and lies well inside the Arctic Circle near 81 degrees north latitude.
The island contains an airstrip and logistical/support buildings used for scientific research and military purposes rather than tourism. There are exposed rocky coasts, glaciers and sea-ice environments typical of the high Arctic.
Exploration and use of Alexandra Land dates to late 19th and early 20th century polar expeditions; throughout the Soviet period and into the present it has been used for polar stations and logistics. Its infrastructure has been maintained and expanded at times to support long-range Arctic operations.
Geographically it sits in the central Franz Josef Land group in the Arctic Ocean, well north of the Russian mainland and the port of Arkhangelsk, surrounded by pack ice for much of the year.
- Access restrictions: Access is tightly controlled and generally limited to Russian state expeditions, military personnel and a small number of organised polar cruises that call at Franz Josef Land.
- Safety and wildlife: Polar bears and severe Arctic weather make landing and shore visits hazardous; guided visits from icebreakers and strict safety protocols are required.
What to See #
- Nagurskoye station and airstrip: A permanent Russian polar installation including an airstrip and support buildings used for logistics, research and military purposes in the high Arctic.
How to Get to Alexandra Land #
There is no commercial access. Reaching Alexandra Land requires booking a polar expedition that departs from Murmansk (Russia) or, less commonly, from Norwegian ports. Voyages typically take 7-14 days and landings depend on sea ice and weather.
Tips for Visiting Alexandra Land #
- Travel to Franz Josef Land only on an organized expedition vessel with permits - independent visits are not allowed.
- Bring layered, windproof clothing and sea-sickness medication; landings are wet and fast-paced.
- If photographing wildlife, use a telephoto: boats must keep distance from walrus and polar bears.
- Expect limited communications; carry paper backups of permits and emergency contacts.
Best Time to Visit Alexandra Land #
Access is seasonal and expedition-dependent; brief Arctic summers (June-August) are the only practical time to visit.
