Main image

Alexanderplatz is a major public square and transport hub in central Berlin’s Mitte district, long known as a commercial and social focal point of the city. The square is dominated visually by the Fernsehturm (TV Tower) and contains several notable public installations, shopping areas and transport connections.

On and around the square visitors find the 368-metre Fernsehturm with an observation deck and rotating restaurant, the cylindrical World Clock (installed in 1969), and large retail and leisure buildings including the Alexa shopping centre. The plaza is served by S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines and many tram and bus routes which make it central for city travel.

Alexanderplatz has evolved from a 19th-century market and staging area into a heavily rebuilt public space; large-scale redevelopment under East German administration in the 1960s reshaped its appearance into the wide boulevards and modernist buildings visible today. Since reunification further changes and commercial development have continued into the 21st century.

The square sits in central Berlin, adjacent to the River Spree and within walking distance of other central sites such as Museum Island and the historic Nikolaiviertel. It is a short urban transit ride from other central stations and neighbourhoods.

  • Transport: Major transport hub with S-Bahn, U-Bahn and regional tram connections, making it one of Berlin's principal interchange points for public transport.
  • Viewing point: The **Fernsehturm** is 368 metres tall and provides one of the most popular observation points in central Berlin; expect queues during peak tourist seasons.
