Alexander Nevsky Lavra
Area Major Orthodox monastery in Saint Petersburg, historic cemetery
Saint Petersburg’s Alexander Nevsky Lavra houses multiple churches, monastic buildings and historic cemeteries where writers, composers and statesmen are buried. Visitors come for Orthodox liturgy, baroque and neoclassical architecture, and the city’s largest monastery complex.
The Alexander Nevsky Lavra is an Orthodox monastic complex in Saint Petersburg founded by Peter the Great in 1710. It became a principal religious institution in the city and retains cathedral churches, gates, cloisters and necropoleis.
The ensemble includes major churches and several historic cemeteries that serve as the final resting places of many Russian cultural and public figures; these necropoleis draw both worshippers and visitors interested in Russia’s cultural history. The lavra also preserves relics associated with Saint Alexander Nevsky.
Founded in the early 18th century as part of Saint Petersburg’s development, the monastery complex grew rapidly under imperial patronage and continued to function as an important religious centre through subsequent centuries.
The lavra sits within central Saint Petersburg near the banks of the Neva and is accessible from the city’s core by public transport.
