Main image

The Alexander Nevsky Lavra is an Orthodox monastic complex in Saint Petersburg founded by Peter the Great in 1710. It became a principal religious institution in the city and retains cathedral churches, gates, cloisters and necropoleis.

The ensemble includes major churches and several historic cemeteries that serve as the final resting places of many Russian cultural and public figures; these necropoleis draw both worshippers and visitors interested in Russia’s cultural history. The lavra also preserves relics associated with Saint Alexander Nevsky.

Founded in the early 18th century as part of Saint Petersburg’s development, the monastery complex grew rapidly under imperial patronage and continued to function as an important religious centre through subsequent centuries.

The lavra sits within central Saint Petersburg near the banks of the Neva and is accessible from the city’s core by public transport.

  • Founding date: Founded by Peter the Great in 1710 and developed as a major monastic complex in Saint Petersburg's early years.
  • Burial sites of famous Russians: Contains several historic cemeteries where figures such as Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Fyodor Dostoevsky are buried, making it a site of cultural pilgrimage.

What to See #

  • Holy Trinity Cathedral: The Holy Trinity Cathedral is the principal church within the lavra and houses relics and important liturgical furnishings associated with the monastery's foundation.
  • Tikhvin Cemetery: Tikhvin Cemetery is part of the lavra's necropolis and contains the graves and commemorative monuments of prominent Russian composers, writers and cultural figures from the 18th to 20th centuries.
  • Lazarevskoe Cemetery and necropolises: The Lazarevskoe Cemetery and other burial grounds form a sequence of necropolises where nobles, statesmen and cultural figures were interred from the 18th century onwards.

How to Get to Alexander Nevsky Lavra #

The Alexander Nevsky Lavra sits beside Alexander Nevsky Square in St. Petersburg. Use the city metro to Ploshchad Alexandra Nevskogo (the pair of stations at Alexander Nevsky Square); from the metro the monastery complex is a short 5-10 minute walk. The site is also reachable by many surface buses and trams that stop at or near Alexander Nevsky Square.

Tips for Visiting Alexander Nevsky Lavra #

  • Use Ploshchad' Alexandra Nevskogo metro station for direct access to the Lavra complex-exits deposit you within a short walk of the monastery entrances and associated museums and cemeteries.
  • Buy separate admission/tickets for the cemetery/necropolis areas (Tikhvin and others) if you want to visit graves of famous Russians; those burial grounds are often ticketed separately from the church interiors.
  • Visit earlier in the morning on weekdays to avoid tour-group congestion and, if possible, time your visit around liturgies to experience active monastic life while still allowing time to view the cathedrals and necropolises.
