Aletsch Glacier
Glacier Europe's largest glacier in Swiss Alps
The Aletsch Glacier in Valais is the largest glacier in the Alps; hikers and sightseers use viewpoints, mountain trails and nearby alpine infrastructure to study glaciology and high-mountain landscapes.
The Aletsch Glacier is the largest glacier in the Alps, located in the canton of Valais in southern Switzerland and forming the central feature of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 2001). It is the principal glacial system draining from the Bernese and Valais peaks.
The glacier stretches for roughly 23 kilometres and occupies a broad valley carved between high alpine ridges. Key viewpoints such as the Eggishorn ridge and alpine villages like Bettmeralp and Fiesch allow visitors to observe the glacier’s expanse; hiking routes and guided glacier walks are common activities in the area.
The glacier has been monitored for more than a century and has been retreating and thinning in recent decades, a trend documented by Swiss glaciological studies. Its status and changes are central to regional climate research and alpine environmental management.
Geographically the glacier lies on the southern side of the Bernese Alps in Valais, above valley communities such as Fiesch and Bettmeralp; the site forms a dominant feature of the high-Alpine landscape.
- Size and significance: At about 23 kilometres long, it is the largest glacier in the Alps and forms the principal glacial tongue of the Jungfrau-Aletsch region.
- Best viewpoint / access: The Eggishorn ridge provides one of the most accessible panoramic viewpoints over the glacier and is reachable from the Fiesch/Bettmeralp lift network.
What to See #
- Eggishorn viewpoint: Prominent viewpoint and ridge offering panoramic views over the glacier and surrounding peaks, reached by a short trail from the Bettmeralp/Eggishorn lift system.
- Bettmeralp / Bettmerhorn area: Accessible mountain accessed from the car-free resort of Bettmeralp; trails and cable cars provide options to view the glacier from above.
How to Get to Aletsch Glacier #
The Aletsch Glacier is reached from the Valais side by rail or road to mountain villages such as Fiesch, Betten/Bettmeralp or Riederalp. From Brig or Visp you can take regional trains or drive to the valley stations (for example Fiesch), then use the local cable cars/telecabines (to Fiescheralp, Bettmeralp or Riederalp) and short marked walks to the glacier viewpoints. Expect a valley‑to‑viewpoint transfer by cable car followed by 10-60 minutes’ walking on trails.
Tips for Visiting Aletsch Glacier #
- Head to Eggishorn (access via Fiesch cable car and a short hike) for the classic panoramic view across the Great Aletsch Glacier - it's less crowded than the Jungfraujoch viewpoint and excellent for late‑afternoon light.
- If you want to walk on the glacier, book a guided glacier‑tour with a certified mountain guide from local operators; the glacier is crevassed and unsafe for unguided visits.
- Avoid the tourist hub of Kleine Scheidegg/Jungfraujoch for panorama shots of Aletsch; instead use viewpoints on the Bettmeralp/Riederalp/Fiesch side to get closer, quieter perspectives and easier parking/cable‑car access.
Best Time to Visit Aletsch Glacier #
For easiest access and hiking, visit in summer (June-September); glacier travel and winter sports require proper gear or guided trips.
