Alesia (city)

Alesia is an ancient fortified hill site in central-eastern France, near the present village of Alise-Sainte-Reine in Burgundy, famous as the location of the decisive Gallic-Roman confrontation in 52 BC. The site preserves archaeological remains of the oppidum and the surrounding siege works attributed to Julius Caesar.

Visitors encounter earthworks, excavation trenches and visible defensive structures on the hill known historically as Mont-Auxois, together with an on-site museum and interpretation centre that presents finds and reconstructions. The combination of visible remains and the museum provides context for the Roman siege and Gallic settlement patterns.

The location became prominent in late republican Roman history when Roman forces besieged and defeated a confederation of Gallic tribes under Vercingetorix. Excavations in the 19th and 20th centuries confirmed the historic association and have uncovered fortifications and artifacts.

Alesia is situated in the Burgundy region near Alise-Sainte-Reine, within the département of Côte-d’Or; it lies inland in rolling agricultural countryside and is visited from regional towns and cities in eastern France.
