Alejandro de Humboldt National Park is a protected area in eastern Cuba celebrated for its high levels of biodiversity and endemism. The park encompasses rugged mountains, karst landscapes and humid forests which together support numerous endemic plant and animal species.

The park covers a large, mountainous area with steep ridges and deep valleys, and it is a focus for biological research and conservation efforts in Cuba. Its range of habitats includes lowland forests, cloud forest and coastal ecosystems.

The park is named after the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt and was established to protect the region’s exceptional natural values. Conservation measures and scientific study have been central to its management since designation.

How to Get to Alejandro de Humboldt National Park #

Alejandro de Humboldt National Park is a remote protected area in eastern Cuba. Typical access is by road from nearby towns such as Baracoa or Moa; visitors normally travel to one of these towns and join guided excursions into the park because many parts are accessible only on foot or by boat and require local guides.

If you plan to visit, arrange transport and guided access from Baracoa or Moa in advance, as services into the park are limited and some internal routes are rough.

Tips for Visiting Alejandro de Humboldt National Park #

  • Arrange a visit to Alejandro de Humboldt National Park through a local eco-guide or tour operator in advance - much of the park is remote and guided access (including boat sections) is the practical way to reach its best biodiversity sites.
  • Plan multi-day visits from regional bases such as Baracoa or Moa and choose the dry season (roughly November-April) for more reliable hiking and wildlife encounters; single-day attempts from distant towns rarely allow meaningful exploration.
  • Tell your guide you're interested in less-frequented sectors (coastal forests and river valleys) - many visitors stick to obvious trails and miss the park's high-biodiversity lowland and coastal habitats.

Best Time to Visit Alejandro de Humboldt National Park #

For Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, visit in the dry season (November-April) when access is easier and heavy rains are less likely.

Dry season (best access)
November-April · 22-30°C at low elevations; warm and humid in lowlands
Drier conditions make trails more accessible and reduce the likelihood of heavy rains-good time for wildlife viewing and fieldwork.
Wet / hurricane season
May-October · 24-33°C; very wet in some areas
This UNESCO biosphere receives heavy rainfall in the wet season; access can be difficult due to rain, and there is an elevated risk of tropical storms.
