Aldeyjarfoss

Aldeyjarfoss is a waterfall in northern Iceland on the river Skjálfandafljót, set in a lava and basalt landscape. The fall drops in a single plunge and is framed by striking columnar basalt formations.

The site is noted for the contrast between white water and the dark hexagonal basalt columns that form a near-circular amphitheatre around the plunge pool, a feature often highlighted in photography. The immediate area offers short walking approaches and viewpoint spots close to the cascade.

Geologically the waterfall occupies an area of recent volcanic and basaltic lava flows; the columnar structures are the result of cooling and contraction of thick lava. There is no built heritage at the fall beyond visitor paths and small viewpoints.

Aldeyjarfoss sits in Iceland’s interior north region, on the Skjálfandafljót river amid volcanic highland terrain. Access is via rural gravel roads from lowland highways; conditions can be rough and seasonal.
