Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos

The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos is a 14th-century fortified palace in Córdoba, Andalusia, Spain, commissioned by King Alfonso XI. The fortress and palace complex combines defensive towers, internal courtyards and formal gardens.

Visitors encounter terraced gardens with pools and fountains, several named towers and a sequence of stone-lined courtyards and halls. The site served as a royal residence and defensive stronghold and later accommodated administrative and judicial functions, including use by the Spanish Inquisition.

Construction began in the early 14th century on the foundations of earlier fortifications and the complex evolved with later additions and restorations. Over the centuries it has served military, residential and institutional roles and today is preserved as a historic monument.

The Alcázar sits beside the Guadalquivir River in Córdoba’s historic district, within easy walking distance of the Mezquita-Catedral and the Roman Bridge.
