Alcazaba of Badajoz

The Alcazaba of Badajoz is a large medieval fortress and citadel occupying a hill above the city of Badajoz in Extremadura. It forms the historic defensive core of the city and contains multiple towers and stretches of fortification.

The complex presents extensive ramparts, inner courtyards and defensive towers that are walked by visitors; its scale and city-overlooking position make it one of Badajoz’s principal landmarks. Walkways along the walls and viewpoints provide broad views across the city and the Guadiana valley.

The fortress was established in the medieval period by Muslim authorities and later modified after the Christian reconquest, with additions and repairs occurring under successive rulers. Its form today reflects centuries of military use and adaptation from its original citadel function to later urban fortification.

Perched on elevated ground on the western side of Badajoz, the Alcazaba overlooks the Guadiana River and the city centre and lies within easy reach of Badajoz’s old town and main squares.
