Albolafia

La Albolafia is a historic riverside waterwheel and mill structure on the Guadalquivir in Córdoba, Andalusia, noted as part of the city’s medieval hydraulic works. It is located close to the Roman Bridge and the Alcázar area.

The site is compact rather than expansive and is most commonly seen as an architectural and engineering curiosity rather than a large visitor attraction. The surviving wheel and masonry are adjacent to riverside promenades and are typically photographed together with views of the Roman Bridge spanning the Guadalquivir. Interpretive panels on site provide context for its role in lifting river water into the city’s irrigation and palace systems.

The wheel and associated structures date from the medieval Islamic period and reflect Córdoba’s historic water management; the mechanism has been rebuilt and restored at different times. Over the centuries the wheel served milling and water-raising functions connected to nearby fortifications and gardens.

Located on the Guadalquivir riverbank near the Roman Bridge in Córdoba’s historic centre, the Albolafia sits within easy walking distance of the Alcázar and other central monuments.
