Why Visit Alappuzha? #
Backwater life defines the appeal here: houseboats and palm-fringed canals set Alappuzha apart as a place to slow down and experience Kerala’s waterways. Punnamada Lake and the annual snake boat races are major cultural draws, while seaside markets and fresh seafood curries showcase local flavors. Travelers seeking a waterfront rhythm, traditional coir industry sites, and relaxed village scenery find Alappuzha’s mix of natural routes and culinary character especially compelling.
Who's Alappuzha For?
Alappuzha’s iconic houseboat cruises through the backwaters are a top romantic pick - private kettuvallam stays with candlelit dinners and quiet canals create memorable getaways. Sundowner walks along the beachfront and quaint canalside cafes add relaxed couple-friendly options.
Alappuzha is ideal for lovers of wetlands and waterways: mangrove-lined canals, birdlife on the Vembanad Lake and coastal lagoons offer rich scenery. Kayak tours, small-boat rides and the annual boat races highlight the region’s aquatic ecosystems and rural landscapes.
Seafood and Kerala home cooking are central in Alappuzha - fresh fish curries, karimeen pollichathu and coconut-forward dishes dominate. Local markets by the harbour and family-run eateries serve authentic coastal flavours; fine dining is limited but the regional cuisine is very satisfying.
Families find Alappuzha accessible and relaxed: gentle houseboat trips, beach time at Alappuzha Beach and easy boat rides suit kids. Many homestays and budget hotels cater to family groups, though medical facilities are basic compared with Kochi nearby.
Adventure options focus on water activities - kayaking through narrow canals, paddleboarding on Vembanad Lake and cycling village routes. If you want more adrenaline, plan day trips to nearby hill stations, but Alappuzha itself centers on low-impact aquatic adventure.
Alappuzha offers budget stays, inexpensive houseboat dorm options and a backpacker-friendly vibe outside peak season. Hostels and homestays around the town and canals make it an affordable base for exploring Kerala’s backwaters on a modest budget.

From COK you can take a prepaid taxi or app taxi to Alappuzha (typical fare about ₹1,200-2,500, 1.5-2 hrs). Alternatively, take a taxi or local bus to Angamaly or Ernakulam station and catch a train to Alappuzha (see train card for times and fares).
Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (TRV): Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) is farther south and is a practical option if your itinerary includes Kerala’s southern districts. Road travel to Alappuzha is about 3.5-4.5 hours by car; taxis range widely (roughly ₹2,500-4,000). There are regular trains and long-distance KSRTC buses from Thiruvananthapuram to Alappuzha - trains take around 3.5-4.5 hours and fares depend on class (see train/bus card).
Train: Alappuzha railway station (ALLP) is on the Ernakulam-Kayamkulam-Thiruvananthapuram line and is served by local passenger, MEMU and express trains from Ernakulam (Ernakulam Junction ERS / Ernakulam Town ERN), Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram (TVC). Typical journey times: Ernakulam → Alappuzha ~1-1.5 hours; Thiruvananthapuram → Alappuzha ~3.5-4.5 hours. Fares are inexpensive for reserved and unreserved classes - short intercity trips are often ₹30-200 depending on class and train type.

Local town buses and private minibuses cover short routes within the district at lower fares.
How to Get Around Alappuzha
Navigating Alappuzha is easiest by train or bus for arrivals and by a mix of autos, ferries and walking for getting around town. For most visitors, trains from Ernakulam and short ferry hops are the most practical, while taxis and app cars are useful for early starts, late arrivals, or travelling with lots of luggage.
- Train (₹30-₹300) - Alappuzha Railway Station (ALLP) is the simplest way to reach the town from Kochi, Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram. Frequent passenger and express services run on the Ernakulam-Kayamkulam-TVC corridor; Ernakulam is about 1-1.5 hours away by train. Trains are reliable for avoiding road traffic and are inexpensive, but expect crowds on unreserved services during peak hours.
- KSRTC & Private Buses (₹10-₹400) - KSRTC operates ordinary, fast and AC services to Alappuzha from across Kerala; private buses fill gaps on popular routes. Buses drop you near the central bus station and town centre; Kochi is typically a short 1-1.5 hour ride. Use KSRTC timetable boards or the state mobile apps for schedules-book AC or long‑distance seats in advance on busy days.
- Auto-rickshaw (₹30-₹200) - Auto-rickshaws are the workhorse for short hops inside Alappuzha-use them for stations, boat jetties and markets. Fares are low for short rides but meters are not always used; agree a price before you start, especially for longer or off‑route trips. Drivers know local shortcuts through busy market areas, which can save time over buses.
- Taxis & App taxis (Ola/Uber) (₹150-₹2,500) - Metered taxis and app-based cars are available but less abundant than in bigger cities; they're best for early morning, late night or luggage-heavy transfers. Intercity taxis from Kochi/COK to Alappuzha are convenient for groups and door‑to‑door travel (expect higher fares than trains). If booking an app taxi, allow extra time for drivers to arrive in town.
- Boats & Ferries (SWTD and private) (₹5-₹3,000) - Water transport is integral to Alappuzha - the Kerala State Water Transport Department (SWTD) runs local ferry services across canals and between nearby islands at very low fares. Short commuter ferries cost only a few rupees to a few dozen rupees and are often the fastest way across waterways; tourist boat rides and houseboats are much more expensive and operate on set routes. For short commutes use the public ferries; book tourist cruises in advance during high season.
- Walking - Alappuzha town is compact and very walkable - the promenade, markets and boat jetties are close to each other. Walking is the best way to soak up the backwater atmosphere and explore narrow lanes where vehicles don't fit. Expect some uneven pavements in market areas and plan for sun/heat during daytime.
