Alaçatı
Amusement Park Aegean town known for windsurfing and stone houses
Alaçatı on Turkey’s Çeşme peninsula offers narrow stone streets, restored Ottoman houses and strong Meltemi winds that make its bay a windsurfing and kitesurfing center. Cafés, weekend markets and local olive-oil cuisine draw visitors.
Alaçatı is a small Aegean town on the Çeşme peninsula in İzmir Province, Turkey, known for its preserved stone architecture and strong summer winds that support watersports. It is one of the region’s popular boutique-tourism centres.
The town is noted for its compact stone-built centre with narrow cobbled streets, restored windmills and small cafés. The nearby sheltered bays and shallow beaches support windsurfing and kitesurfing schools, while marinas and boat trips serve divers and sailors. Small boutique hotels and restaurants cluster around the harbour and main square.
Alaçatı developed as a port and market settlement; its built fabric reflects Ottoman and Aegean-Greek influences. The town’s demographic character changed after the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey, and it has grown as a seaside resort during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
Geographically it sits on the western tip of the İzmir province on the Çeşme peninsula, a short drive from the district town of Çeşme and roughly 75-90 kilometres west of central İzmir. The landscape is low-lying coastal with sheltered bays and neighbouring sandy beaches.
- Windsports season: Summer months offer steady northerly thermal winds that make the area one of Turkey's main windsurfing and kitesurfing centres.
- Best viewpoints: Photogenic stone houses and restored windmills on the hill provide the best vantage points for town views and sunset photos.
