Alaca Höyük is an archaeological mound and ancient settlement in Çorum Province in central Turkey, notable for its Early Bronze Age royal tombs and long sequence of occupation. The site is a key reference for pre-Hittite and early Anatolian archaeology.
The principal highlights are the group of richly furnished Early Bronze Age tombs with gold, silver and bronze grave goods and the remains of the citadel and lower town. Excavated burial contexts include ceremonial metalwork and distinctive bronze “sun” discs that illustrate early Anatolian metalworking skills.
The settlement was occupied from the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age and continued to be reused into later Anatolian and Hittite periods. The tombs date to the third millennium BCE and the visible architectural phases record changes in use across millennia.
The mound sits near the modern town of Alaca in Çorum Province in central Anatolia. The site lies inland on the Anatolian plateau and is approached by local roads from nearby towns.
- Major finds in museums: Many of the most significant finds from the site, including bronze "sun discs" and metal implements, are displayed in museums such as the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara.
- Visitor notes: On-site signage and footpaths allow close viewing of the royal tombs and exposed building foundations but facilities are basic; bring sun and weather protection for open-site visits.
