Ala-Too Square

Ala-Too Square is the principal public square in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. It was renamed Ala-Too following independence in 1991 and serves as the city’s main ceremonial space.

The open plaza is used for national ceremonies, rallies, concerts and seasonal events and is anchored by monumental sculpture and a flag or obelisk near its centre. The square is fronted by major public buildings and museums and is a frequent gathering place for locals and visitors.

Originally laid out during the Soviet period as the city’s central square, it was repurposed after 1991 to reflect national symbols and events. Over time the square has hosted official parades, independence-day celebrations and large-scale public gatherings.

The square sits in central Bishkek, within easy walking distance of the city’s main avenues and public buildings.
