Al Thumama Stadium

Al Thumama Stadium is a purpose-built football stadium in the Al Thumama district of Doha, Qatar that was completed to host matches for the FIFA World Cup 2022. The venue was constructed as part of Qatar’s national stadium programme for the tournament.

A compact, single-tier bowl designed for football with spectator facilities and hospitality areas, the stadium hosts matches and events and was used during the 2022 World Cup. The venue’s seating capacity is roughly 40,000 spectators, with surrounding transport links and access designed to serve tournament spectators and post-tournament events.

The architecture references local cultural motifs in the stadium’s exterior and roof and integrates modern stadium systems for ventilation, lighting and spectator circulation. After the tournament the site is planned for community and sporting use at a reduced configuration.

Built specifically for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the stadium was constructed in the late 2010s and opened in the lead up to the tournament. It formed part of a wider programme of new and upgraded venues across Qatar for the event.

The stadium sits in the Al Thumama neighbourhood within the Doha municipality, on the southern side of the city’s urban area and within the broader metropolitan transport network.
