Al-Qastal is a hilltop site and former Palestinian village on the approach to Jerusalem, located west of the city along the main road to the coastal plain. It is known for its strategic position and role in the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.

The village was contested and depopulated during the fighting in 1948; the fighting at Qastal was a pivotal action for control of the road into Jerusalem and led to notable casualties on both sides. The site has since been preserved and interpreted in relation to that conflict.

Sited on a prominent hill roughly west of central Jerusalem, alongside the Jerusalem-Latrun/Tel Aviv road, within the Jerusalem District.

  • 1948 battle: Site of a key 1948 battle in which Palestinian commander Abd al-Qadir al-Husayni was killed, affecting control of the road to Jerusalem.
