Al-Omari Grand Mosque
Mosque Historic Beirut mosque featuring Ottoman-era architecture
A central Beirut landmark housed in the city’s old quarters, visited for its layered architecture and as a waypoint when tracing Beirut’s Ottoman and later urban history.
The Al-Omari Grand Mosque is a historic mosque in central Beirut that occupies a building with Crusader-era origins. The present mosque is one of the city’s oldest religious structures and combines elements from different periods.
Notable features include masonry and architectural elements that date to the building’s time as a Crusader church together with later Mamluk and Ottoman modifications visible in the prayer hall and minaret. The combination of styles is a primary reason people visit the mosque.
The building began life as a Crusader-period church in the 12th century and was converted for use as a mosque in 1291 after the Mamluk conquest; it was later altered and repaired in subsequent centuries. The structure suffered damage during the 20th-century Lebanese Civil War and was restored during post-war reconstruction of downtown Beirut.
The mosque stands in Beirut’s historic downtown/core area within Beirut Governorate, close to the city’s central district and the commercial souks.
- Architecture: The structure preserves visible Crusader masonry alongside later Islamic architectural elements, reflecting its layered history.
- Location tip: Located in Beirut's central historic district, making it easy to visit with other downtown sites and the nearby souks.
