Al-Marwani Mosque
Mosque Prayer hall beneath Al-Aqsa compound, historic structure
Beneath the southeastern precinct of the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount, the Al-Marwani prayer hall occupies vaulted substructure once called Solomon’s Stables and serves as a Muslim prayer space within the compound.
The Al-Marwani Mosque, commonly referred to in English as the Marwani Prayer Hall or Solomon’s Stables, is an extensive vaulted space beneath the southeastern platform of the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif in Jerusalem. It is located within the Old City precincts and forms part of the compound’s support structures.
The feature is an underground vaulted hall made up of ancient substructures and arches that have been adapted for use as a large prayer and communal area. The space is accessed from within the Temple Mount compound rather than from the surrounding streets of the Old City.
The vaulted substructures predate the modern conversion and have been known historically as Solomon’s Stables; in the late 20th century the Islamic Waqf adapted the area to serve as a prayer hall and service space. Archaeological and political sensitivities surround changes made to the hidden substructure over recent decades.
The Marwani prayer hall lies beneath the southeastern part of the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif in Jerusalem’s Old City, immediately adjacent to the Al-Aqsa compound and its courtyards.
- Current use: Converted into a multipurpose prayer area by the Islamic religious authorities in the late 20th century and used for worship and community functions on the Temple Mount.
