Al-Khazneh, the carved ‘Treasury’ façade at Petra, draws visitors for its Hellenistic-influenced rock-cut architecture, narrow Siq approach and archaeological context within the Nabatean city.
Al-Khazneh (the Treasury) is a rock-cut façade carved into the sandstone cliffs of Petra in southern Jordan, dated to around the 1st century CE and created by the Nabataeans. It is one of Petra’s most iconic monuments and a central attraction within the archaeological city.
- Approach: Reached after a walk of about 1.2 kilometres through the narrow sandstone gorge known as the Siq, which forms the main approach to the site.
- Façade height: The ornate carved façade is carved directly into the sandstone cliff and stands at roughly 40 metres high.
How to Get to Al-Khazneh #
Petra is reached from Amman (approx. 3-4 hour drive) or Aqaba (1-2 hours). Regular buses and private transfers run to Wadi Musa; the site is a short walk from town.
Tips for Visiting Al-Khazneh #
- Visit early in the morning to avoid the midday crowds and heat; the Treasury area can become congested.
- Wear modest clothing when entering Petra's religious sites; some trails are exposed and require good footwear.
- Stay overnight in Wadi Musa for an early start - visits at dawn can be magical and much quieter.
Best Time to Visit Al-Khazneh #
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for hiking and visiting the outdoors; early mornings are best to avoid crowds.
