Main image

Al Jalali Fort is a historic fortification on a rocky promontory guarding the western side of Muscat harbour in Oman, built in the 16th century and altered by later Omani authorities.

The fort presents massive stone ramparts and gun platforms overlooking the harbour entrance, and interior chambers that have been used for garrison, prison and administrative functions at different times.

Originally constructed by Portuguese forces during their occupation of Muscat in the 1500s, the fort was later adapted and maintained by Omani rulers and remains a prominent element of Muscat’s historic harbour defences.

The fort stands on the eastern flank of the old Muscat harbour, opposite the similarly placed Al Mirani Fort, overlooking the Muttrah Corniche in central Muscat.

  • Origin and position: Constructed by the Portuguese in the 16th century and subsequently modified by Omani rulers, the fort guards the entrance to Muscat harbour opposite Al Mirani Fort.
  • Access and viewing: Generally not open to casual visitors; the best external views are from the Muttrah Corniche or from small harbour boats that pass the fort.

What to See #

  • Ramparts and gun platforms: The main defensive works include thick masonry ramparts and gun platforms facing the harbour entrance, arranged across the fort's steep rock outcrop.
  • Interior rooms and garrison spaces: Interior chambers and staircases that once served garrison functions and that later housed prisoners and administrative uses; some spaces have been used for temporary exhibitions.

How to Get to Al Jalali Fort #

Al Jalali Fort sits above Old Muscat on the harbor. From Muttrah Corniche a taxi or local bus can reach the Old Muscat area in 10-15 minutes from central Muscat. Walking from Muttrah to the waterfront viewpoint takes about 20-30 minutes along the corniche.

Tips for Visiting Al Jalali Fort #

  • The fort sits on the Mutrah/Old Muscat waterfront - combine the visit with a stroll of the Corniche at sunset for the best views of Al Mirani and Al Jalali.
  • Photography is allowed of exteriors; do not attempt to enter without formal permission - the fort is used for official functions and access is tightly controlled.
  • Hire a local guide familiar with Omani history to hear the Portuguese and Omani-era anecdotes that are not on signage.
