Al-Hamidiyah Souq
Market Historic covered market in Damascus' old city
Running beside Damascus’s Umayyad Mosque, Al-Hamidiyah Souq is a covered Ottoman-era market selling spices, textiles and sweets; tourists shop, sample street food and study the old city’s narrow alleys.
Al-Hamidiyah Souq is a large covered market in the Old City of Damascus, Syria, dating to the Ottoman period and named after Sultan Abdul Hamid II. It is one of the city’s main commercial and tourist thoroughfares.
Stalls and small shops line narrow covered lanes selling textiles, spices, sweets, glassware, and souvenirs along with traditional Damascene food stalls. The souq functions as a continuous shopping arcade rather than a single open square and is frequently combined with visits to the nearby Citadel and the Umayyad Mosque.
The core of the souq was developed under Ottoman administration in the 19th century and expanded around that period; its present layout reflects that urban-intentional covering and planning. Over time it became Damascus’s principal market and a focal point for trade and tourism in the Old City.
The souq sits within the walled Old City of Damascus, immediately north of the Umayyad Mosque and close to the medieval Citadel, in central Damascus. It occupies a compact urban block that is readily reached on foot from surrounding historic streets.
