Al-Buraq Mosque
Mosque Mosque in the West Bank with local religious significance
A mosque in the West Bank that draws worshippers and visitors interested in the area’s religious sites and access to nearby Old City landmarks.
Al-Buraq Mosque is a small prayer structure located on the western edge of the Noble Sanctuary/Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is associated with the Islamic tradition that the Prophet’s steed, the Buraq, was tethered at this spot during the Isra and Mi’raj.
The mosque provides a modest prayer space immediately adjacent to the Western Wall plaza and forms part of the wider ensemble of religious sites on the western side of the Haram al-Sharif. It is primarily of interest for its religious significance and its location next to the exposed retaining wall of the sanctuary.
The site’s importance derives from early Islamic tradition; the area around the western wall and the mosque has been a place of Muslim prayer and devotion for many centuries and has been modified over time as the broader Haram al-Sharif complex changed.
The mosque sits in Jerusalem’s Old City on the western side of the Noble Sanctuary, immediately next to the Western Wall area and within walking distance of other Old City landmarks.
- Religious significance: Named for the mythical steed associated with the Prophet Muhammad's Night Journey, and tied to Islamic religious tradition at the site.
- Access note: Located inside a sensitive and heavily visited religious complex where access and security arrangements can change, so check local guidance before visiting.
