The palace compound comprises the ornate palace façade and manicured gardens flanked by the historic Portuguese forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani; the buildings themselves are not open to public tours. The present palace building dates to the latter half of the 20th century and has been used as the sultanate’s ceremonial palace since its construction. It occupies a prominent position within the historic Old Muscat seafront area.
