Al Akhdar Mountains
Mountains Omani mountain range with terraced agriculture and wadis
The Al Akhdar Mountains in northern Oman offer cooler highland terrain, terraced farms and winding mountain roads; hikers use the passes and local villages for access and summer grazing.
The Al Akhdar Mountains are a section of the Hajar mountain system in northern Oman, within the Al Batinah administrative area. The range is characterized by steep ridges, deep wadis, and cliff-lined valleys.
The area is noted for its terraced villages and mountain agriculture, and it offers hiking routes and viewpoints above the coastal plain. The higher elevations produce a cooler microclimate compared with the surrounding lowland regions.
The mountain slopes have been inhabited for centuries by mountain communities that built terraces and small settlements adapted to the rugged terrain. Modern roads and track access provide entry points for hikers and visitors to selected plateaus and villages.
Geographically the range rises inland from Oman’s Al Batinah coastal strip, forming part of the inland highland barrier that separates the coastal plain from Oman’s interior.
- Climate and agriculture: Located inland from the coastal plain, the area is markedly cooler than the lowlands and is known for terraced agriculture and mountain villages that relieve the desert heat of the plains below.
