How to Get to Akureyri
Akureyri is Iceland's main northern town and is well served by domestic flights from Reykjavík or by long-distance bus along the Ring Road. For regional exploration, renting a car gives the most flexibility.
Akureyri Airport (AEY): Akureyri has a small regional airport with frequent scheduled flights from Reykjavík (Domestic Airport/RKV) operated by Icelandair and regional carriers. Flights take about 45-50 minutes; advance one-way fares often start in the low thousands of ISK when booked early (typical promotional fares ≈ ISK 6,000-12,000).
Keflavík / Reykjavík (KEF/RKV): International travellers generally arrive at Keflavík (KEF) and continue to Reykjavík city (by Flybus or transfer) then connect by domestic flight or by bus along Route 1 to Akureyri (see bus below). Flybus from KEF to Reykjavík is ~45 minutes and costs roughly ISK 3,000-4,000 one-way.
Train: Iceland has no rail network.
Bus: Inter-city buses run between Reykjavík and Akureyri (operators including Strætó and private coach companies such as SBA-Norðurleið). Bus travel along the Ring Road takes about 6-7 hours and fares typically range from ISK ~3,000-6,000 depending on operator and season. Local Akureyri buses cover town routes and nearby communities.
How to Get Around Akureyri #
Akureyri’s centre is compact and pleasant to walk; many attractions, shops and restaurants sit within easy strolling distance.
