The island is primarily a rocky bird habitat noted for seabird nesting and offers unobstructed views back to the Reykjavík skyline from its shores.
Historically uninhabited, Akurey is visited mainly by birdwatchers and small-boat excursions rather than regular commercial services.
The islet sits in Kollafjörður/Faxaflói Bay a short boat ride from the capital’s coastline.
