Akrai

Akrai is an archaeological site in southeast Sicily representing an ancient Greek settlement with visible Hellenistic and later remains. It lies close to the modern town of Palazzolo Acreide and is important for its theatre and urban archaeology.

Founded and settled in antiquity by Greek colonists associated with nearby Syracuse, the site developed through the Classical and Hellenistic periods and continued to be used into Roman times. Archaeological excavations have revealed the town plan, public buildings and burial areas.

Akrai stands on a limestone plateau south of the modern town of Palazzolo Acreide in the province of Syracuse, inland from the southeastern coast of Sicily.
