Akershus Fortress
Castle Medieval fortress and royal mausoleum in Oslo
On Oslo’s waterfront, Akershus Fortress is a medieval castle complex housing museums and ceremonial sites; visitors explore ramparts, history displays and harbor viewpoints.
Akershus Fortress is a medieval castle and fortified complex overlooking the Oslofjord in central Oslo, built from the late 13th century as a royal stronghold and later expanded. It remains one of Oslo’s principal historic sites and includes both defensive works and castle buildings.
Construction began under King Haakon V around the turn of the 14th century to protect Oslo and the royal seat; later Renaissance-style modifications strengthened the defences and adapted the site for artillery. Over centuries the complex served as a prison, military installation and ceremonial site, and parts were modernised as museums and government facilities in the 20th century.
The fortress sits on a rocky headland by the Oslo waterfront, a short walk from Oslo City Hall and the main city centre, providing commanding views across the inner Oslofjord.
- Visitor access: Open grounds provide waterfront views of the Oslofjord and a popular public promenade; the fortress courtyard is accessible to visitors year-round though some buildings host official functions.
- Long history: Constructed from the late 13th century onward by medieval Norwegian kings, it has served as royal residence, prison, military base and modern ceremonial site.
What to See #
- Akershus Castle (Inner Castle): The medieval castle keep and inner complex built in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, containing historical state rooms and the royal mausoleum.
- Norwegian Resistance Museum: A museum within the fortress complex documenting Norway's World War II occupation and resistance, located in the fortress area accessible to visitors.
