Akaishi Mountains
Mountains Japanese Southern Alps mountain range with high peaks
The Akaishi (Southern Alps) feature long ridges and peaks over 3,000 m, served by a network of mountain huts; alpinists and multi-day hikers tackle glacier-fed routes, ridgelines and seasonal snowfields.
The Akaishi Mountains, commonly called the Southern Alps of Japan, are a major mountain range on central Honshu spanning parts of Nagano, Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures. The range contains multiple peaks over 3,000 metres and is one of Japan’s principal high-mountain areas.
Alpine ridges, glacial cirques, and steep valleys define the terrain and support characteristic alpine flora and fauna. The area is popular with multi-day hikers, mountaineers and ski-tourers, and is served by a network of established trails and mountain huts that permit staged ascents of high summits.
The range has long been a focus of Japanese alpinism and scenic appreciation, with routes connecting major peaks and valleys; developed approaches and marked trails make many of the principal summits accessible in summer.
Geographically the Akaishi Mountains lie in central Honshu, forming a watershed between inland valleys and the Pacific side of the island; major access points are from the prefectures of Nagano, Yamanashi and Shizuoka.
- Highest point: Highest summit reaches 3,193 metres, making the range home to several of Japan's 3,000-metre peaks.
- Seasonal access: Best season for most hiking and mountaineering is July through September, when snow has largely melted from the high trails.
What to See #
- Kita-dake (3,193 m): Kita-dake - Highest peak in the range at 3,193 metres, a classic objective for high-altitude hikers in central Honshu.
- Mount Aino: Mount Aino - One of the 3,000-metre peaks in the range and a common multi-day ridge objective for mountain parties.
- Alpine cirques and huts: Senjōjiki Cirque and alpine hut network - High-elevation cirques and a system of mountain huts and trails used by climbers and trekkers during the summer season.
How to Get to Akaishi Mountains #
The Akaishi Mountains (the Southern Alps) cover a broad area of central Honshu, so access depends on which peak you’re aiming for. Common gateways are the valley towns served by JR lines-Kofu (Yamanashi), Matsumoto (Nagano) and towns in Shizuoka-followed by regional buses or mountain roads to trailheads. From Tokyo expect a 2-3 hour drive (roughly 150-250 km, depending on the exact destination) via the Chuo Expressway or Tomei/Chubu routes; once in the valleys use local mountain buses or cable cars to reach alpine trailheads (bus schedules are often seasonal).
Tips for Visiting Akaishi Mountains #
- Plan alpine treks during the main summer season (roughly July-September) when snow and access are most stable; many high trails and ridges remain snowbound outside this window.
- Reserve mountain huts and transport well ahead of time - the Akaishi (Southern Alps) has a network of huts that fill up in peak season and are the practical base for multi-day traverses.
- If you intend to cross glaciers or high ridges, go with a certified guide or ensure your party has glacier experience and proper kit; popular approaches are long and involve remote, exposed sections where afternoon storms are common.
Best Time to Visit Akaishi Mountains #
Visit the Akaishi Mountains in mid to late summer (July-September) for the safest and most accessible hiking and climbing conditions.
