Ainos National Park
National Park Greek national park on Kefalonia with native fir forest
On Cephalonia’s highest slopes, Ainos National Park preserves dense stands of Greek fir and limestone ridges; hikers come for summit trails and wide views over the Ionian Sea and endemic flora.
Ainos National Park sits on the island of Kefalonia in the Ionian Islands of Greece and protects the forested massif centered on Mount Ainos, the island’s highest point at 1,628 meters. The park is noted for its native Greek fir forest and for scenic highland landscapes.
Hiking to the summit and walking through the fir forest are the main activities; routes lead to viewpoints that look out over the island and the surrounding Ionian Sea. The park contains a network of trails and open ridgelines that are popular with walkers and nature observers.
The massif is primarily composed of limestone and hosts long-established stands of Abies cephalonica that have been a conservation focus. The area has been protected to preserve these native forests and the island’s highland ecosystems.
Geographically the park occupies the central highlands of Kefalonia, within easy reach of the island’s main towns, including Argostoli, and dominates the island’s skyline.
- Summit view: The summit at 1,628 meters provides the most reliable long-distance views on clear days, often used as the end point for maintained hiking routes.
- Vegetation: The park protects extensive stands of the native Cephalonian fir, a characteristic tree of higher elevations on the island.
What to See #
- Mount Ainos: Rises to 1,628 meters and is the island high point with a cleared summit offering panoramic views across Kefalonia and the Ionian Sea.
- Greek fir forest: A native stand of Greek fir (Abies cephalonica) and mixed Mediterranean flora that forms dense forest cover across the massif and is a principal conservation value of the park.
