Aihole

Aihole is a historic temple complex in northern Karnataka, India, recognised as a key early centre for Deccan temple architecture. The site preserves numerous structural and rock-cut temples that document architectural experimentation under the early Chalukyas.

The complex includes more than a hundred monuments, ranging from small shrines to larger temples such as the Durga temple and the Lad Khan temple, which date largely to the early medieval period. Carvings and plans at Aihole show a variety of temple types and construction techniques that influenced later South Indian architecture.

Aihole served as an important religious and cultural centre during the 6th to 12th centuries, connected to the Chalukya dynasty’s political and artistic activities in the Deccan. Many monuments bear inscriptions and stylistic features useful for dating and understanding regional developments.

The site lies in Bagalkot district, Karnataka, and is often visited in conjunction with nearby early medieval sites such as Pattadakal and Badami, which are within regional driving distance.
