Aihole
Archaeological Site Ancient temple site in Karnataka, early Chalukya architecture.
Karnataka’s Aihole preserves early Chalukya temples and stone carvings; visitors study dozen-plus temple ruins, inscriptions and compact museum displays to trace 6th-12th century temple architecture.
Aihole is a historic temple complex in northern Karnataka, India, recognised as a key early centre for Deccan temple architecture. The site preserves numerous structural and rock-cut temples that document architectural experimentation under the early Chalukyas.
The complex includes more than a hundred monuments, ranging from small shrines to larger temples such as the Durga temple and the Lad Khan temple, which date largely to the early medieval period. Carvings and plans at Aihole show a variety of temple types and construction techniques that influenced later South Indian architecture.
Aihole served as an important religious and cultural centre during the 6th to 12th centuries, connected to the Chalukya dynasty’s political and artistic activities in the Deccan. Many monuments bear inscriptions and stylistic features useful for dating and understanding regional developments.
The site lies in Bagalkot district, Karnataka, and is often visited in conjunction with nearby early medieval sites such as Pattadakal and Badami, which are within regional driving distance.
- Number of temples: The site contains over 100 temples and monuments that illustrate the early development of Deccan temple architecture under the Chalukya dynasty.
- Dating and highlights: Noted monuments include the Durga and Lad Khan temples; many structures date from the 6th to 8th centuries with later additions through the 12th century.
What to See #
- Temple complex: A compact group of more than a hundred structural temples, cave shrines and smaller shrines displaying early experimentations in South Indian temple forms.
- Durga and Lad Khan temples: Key individual monuments such as the Durga temple and Lad Khan temple, which are frequently cited for their early Chalukya architectural forms and sculptural detail.
- Outlying shrines: Smaller shrine clusters and stepped structures scattered across a valley site, representing religious and civic activity from roughly the 6th through 12th centuries.
Tips for Visiting Aihole #
- Visit first thing in the morning when low light brings out temple carvings and the site is coolest and least crowded; the main complex with the Durga and Lad Khan temples is a logical starting point.
- Temples are spread across several clusters on the plateau - rent a bicycle or hire a local guide/driver to reach the outer groups efficiently and to get historical context you'll otherwise miss.
- Combine Aihole with nearby Pattadakal and Badami on the same day or as a short circuit; many visitors miss the small onsite archaeological museum that houses inscriptions and explanatory panels.
