Aiguille du Midi
Mountain Alpine summit with cable-car access and panoramic views
A cable car from Chamonix reaches Aiguille du Midi at about 3,842 m, giving access to the Mont Blanc massif, the ‘Step into the Void’ glass viewpoint, alpine climbs and the Vallée Blanche glacier route.
Aiguille du Midi is a 3,842-metre peak in the Mont Blanc massif above Chamonix in the French Alps, famed for its panoramic platforms and high-altitude cable car. The mountain is one of the most accessible high-Alpine viewpoints in Europe because of the direct lift from the Chamonix valley.
At the summit complex visitors find panoramic terraces that look over the Mont Blanc range, a glass ‘Step into the Void’ viewing box and short exhibition spaces; the site also serves as a staging point for mountaineers heading onto the high ridges and for guided glacier access. The cable car includes an intermediate station at Plan de l’Aiguille and completes a near-vertical ascent of about 2,800 metres from Chamonix.
The Aiguille du Midi cable car opened in the mid-20th century and transformed public access to high Alpine scenery; since then it has been a major attraction for sightseers and climbers alike. The site is heavily visited in summer and remains popular in winter for access to high-mountain routes.
Located above the town of Chamonix in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France, the Aiguille du Midi crowns the southern side of the Chamonix valley and is reached by the dedicated cable car that begins in the town centre.
- Elevation and ascent: Summit station elevation is 3,842 metres, and the cable car makes a vertical ascent of roughly 2,800 metres from Chamonix, making it one of the highest vertical lifts from a valley town in the Alps.
- Practical advice: The facility functions as a year-round arrival point for mountaineers and as a major tourist viewpoint; weather can change rapidly so clothing for high-altitude conditions is recommended.
What to See #
- Summit terraces and 'Step into the Void': The upper station complex includes terraces and viewing platforms at about 3,842 metres offering panoramic views of the Mont Blanc massif, plus the glass 'Step into the Void' viewing box.
- Cable car and Plan de l'Aiguille: The cable car has an intermediate stop at Plan de l'Aiguille and provides a fast ascent from Chamonix to the high station used as a start point for alpine routes on the Mont Blanc massif.
How to Get to Aiguille du Midi #
The Aiguille du Midi is accessed from Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. Take the Téléphérique de l’Aiguille du Midi cable car from the center of Chamonix (the cable car station is a 10-15 minute walk from Chamonix-Mont-Blanc SNCF train station).
By public transport, travel to Chamonix by SNCF train or regional bus; by car it’s about a 1‑hour drive from Geneva (roughly 80-90 km) via the A40/N205 and then local roads into Chamonix. The cable car ride to the summit station takes about 20-30 minutes.
Tips for Visiting Aiguille du Midi #
- Book a first-cabin (early morning) ascent of the Chamonix cable car to avoid the longest queues and to get the clearest views before clouds build in the valley.
- Reserve tickets online and check wind and weather reports the day before - the Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi frequently closes in high wind and refunds/exchanges can be limited on-site.
- Allow time to step through the short tunnel to the summit terraces and the 'Step into the Void' glass box; these specific viewpoints are the main highlights and can have separate lines.
Best Time to Visit Aiguille du Midi #
For hiking and clearer panoramic views go in summer; for winter sports and snow conditions visit in the ski season.
