Ai-Khanoum

Ai-Khanoum is an archaeological site in northern Afghanistan that preserves a Hellenistic city founded in the aftermath of Alexander the Great’s eastern campaigns. It is one of the most important remains of Greco-Bactrian urbanism in Central Asia.

The site displays the remains of a planned city with a citadel, theatre, temples and administrative buildings, showing a mixture of Greek and local architectural forms. Visitors and researchers focus on the city layout, monumental architecture and the material culture that illustrates cross-cultural influences.

Ai-Khanoum was established in the late 4th century BCE and flourished under Hellenistic and Greco-Bactrian rulers; it declined in the later Hellenistic period. Significant archaeological excavation in the 20th century documented the urban plan and recovered a large range of artifacts.

The site lies in Takhar Province in northern Afghanistan, on a strategic route near the confluence of river valleys; it is remote from major modern urban centres and has been the subject of conservation and access challenges.
